Meet The Not-So-Magnificent 7 Most Toxic Office Personalities

1. Debbie Downer

This personality defect is most noticeable to your patients and potentially most damaging to your practice. She (or he) manages to see the negative in everything and loves to play the role of victim. Their motto is “Poor Me”. Look on the plus side: Downers are usually good at thinking ahead and uncovering trouble spots. Let them identify potential problems with your new office initiatives and help you create an action plan to avoid trouble.

2. Donnie Drama

If it’s not a crisis, this employee will turn it into one by overreacting with emotional outbursts designed to manipulate sympathetic listeners. Drama queens and kings attract people by playing with their emotions. They also solve problems through social connections. Give them the responsibility for creating positive PR for your next big office event.

3. Dynamic Duo

This is one case where two heads are NOT better than one. These workplace allies are loyal only to each other. They make their own rules and exclude everyone else. On the plus side, this pair is great at forming close personal connections. If they’re competent, consider giving them mentoring assignments and monitor them closely.

4. Dictatorial Diva

That smart, skilled, long-term employee who thinks they are irreplaceable and above discipline. Critical and bossy, they ignore management and do things their own way, disregarding the rules, often making other employees suffer. Since the diva has a strong desire for independence, assign them projects where they have more autonomy and some authority plus your supervision.

5. Norma Knows It All

Even if she’s wrong she’s always right, so don’t try to argue with her. She is also overly critical with an air of superiority that allows her to reject other peoples’ opinions and ideas without consideration. On the flip side, Norma loves to be seen by others as an expert. Your best strategy is to invest in some healthcare staff training or continuing education, then have Norma teach the rest of your staff what she learned.

6. Eddie’s Excuses

There is often one employee who always seems to have an excuse, alibi, reason or extenuating circumstances that kept them from completing an assignment. It’s usually someone else’s fault. This particular personality defect can quickly ruin the office environment creating resentment among staff members who often try to pick up Eddie’s slack. On a positive note, Eddie is quite creative. Help him put that creativity to good use by giving him an assignment that requires innovation. It might help him feel more invested in completing his assignments on time.

7. Peter Plodder the Procrastinator

If ever there was a speed bump on the road of office life, it’s this guy. He’s the foot-dragging procrastinator who can’t seem to get out of his own way and is always behind schedule. His decreased productivity is contagious because he slows others down, too. He also suffers from chronic analysis paralysis. The best way to take advantage of his careful, deliberate nature: Give him your most detail-oriented tasks. Let him update a policy manual or proofread your healthcare practice marketing materials or web content.
